Our Family Garden

Hello web,

I wanted to show some pictures of our first garden at our new home.  The previous owner kept a large garden, two to be exact, and we wish to carry on her efforts.  Since we have the two gardens, we were able to deal with them one at a time.  This helped a lot as we were a little overwhelmed at first.

The smaller Garden

Our Potato Farm

The smaller garden is about 15 by 25 and is surrounded by fences on the east and south side.  We tackled this garden first, in the late winter, and planted about 20 potato plants well before the last hard freeze.  This was an issue when the last hard freeze hit because most of the plants had broken ground.  We used walls of water and a tarp to attempt to protect them but a few plants had their crowns frozen dead.  All of them have recovered nicely and here is a recent picture.

It keeps us busy with weeding and watering.  We recently installed a drip watering system.  Hopefully it is enough.

The Main Garden

The Main Garden, a good view of the whole thing.

The main garden is much larger.  It is about 60 feet square and we were able to create 13 rows by using our neighbors tiller.  Here is what we planted:

  1. Corn
  2. Peas
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Swiss Chard
  5. Spinach
  6. Armenian Cucumbers
  7. Summer Squash
  8. Carrots
  9. Zucchini
  10. Watermelon
  11. Winter squash

Now that we have the water pretty much figured out, we have been pulling weeds.  And pulling weeds…

I will post some more pics as the summer moves on.

A picture of our harvest so far this Summer

With the weird Utah Spring behind us, Summer has been really good to our garden.  After a few hours of digging for potatoes and harvesting squash, we came up with this rather large collection. That’s about two tons of squash and zucchini; 25 pounds or so of red potatoes, two cucumbers, a few tomatoes, and a bunch of peas.  The kids have also been very helpful in the garden.

The potato garden after taking up a few red potato plants.

Down here you can see that we have dug up about 5 of the 10 red potato plants.  Each plant nets about 10 potato’s so that is where we got so many from.
